Having Trouble Retaining Golfers?

Loyalty is one of the most difficult of tournament goals to achieve. But once you have it, you have something your competition may never have – a full field of golfers. One way to achieve this is to say thank you (in a big way) to each golfer – regardless of your budget. 1. Golfers remember their welcoming gift or ‘goody bag, long after the tournament is over. All golfers will look forward to your tournament next year if you give a gift that is memorable and usable. 2. Biggest gift-giving mistake? Don’t skimp and give each golfer the highest quality item within your budget. Chose two to three quality items instead of a plastic bag filled with trinkets. 3. Show your true appreciation. Put some thought into the golfer gift and show each golfer how special they are. For the price of a golf shirt, provide everyone with a golf club engraved with the tournament name or with a sponsor’s logo. 4. Absolute hit? An absolute hit at our tournaments is a logo’d golf glove for each golfer. Some...

Looking for Golf Tournament Sponsorship Ideas?

Our phone has been busy with tournaments looking for golf tournament sponsorship ideas. This tip highlights an easy way to increase revenue at your golf tournament and a great way to impress your golf tournament sponsors. SUPERTICKETS – an easy way to increase golf tournament revenue SUPERTICKETS are a great way to raise money for your tournament without ‘hitting the golfers up’ at every turn on the golf course. The ticket combines every purchase in one place for golfers to buy at registration – you only ask for one donation. While most golfers expect to spend a little money at a charitable event, they can tire very quickly of being asked to buy mulligan tickets at registration, spend more money on the course to ‘beat the pro’ and to buy raffle tickets at the banquet. Each SUPERTICKET is: custom-printed with your tournament logo and what you want to include in the ticket.
Get Serious About Volunteers

While it may appear easier to plan a golf tournament yourself, than to coordinate a group of volunteers, do not attempt to organize a tournament alone.

1. It is more work than you think. Organizing a golf tournament is some of the most time-consuming work for a group. There are always more details than anticipated; it takes longer to secure sponsorship dollars than you think and, yes, sometimes volunteers’ enthusiasm wanes, leaving a few committee members to carry the extra work.

2. Strength in numbers. The saying, “There is strength in numbers” truly applies to golf tournament planning. Even professional tournament planners rely on the strength of working with a committee of four to eight workers. Aside from sharing the detailed work, committee members contribute invaluable ideas, establish and maintain relationships with possible sponsors, golfing foursomes and most importantly, they help support your goals.

3. Choosing volunteers. Some individuals join because they have a personal connection to the chosen cause, others want to receive recognition and others just want to be part of a group. Find out why someone is interested in joining the committee and how they can contribute to the golf tournament’s success. Everyone who joins the committee should be prepared to contribute time, money or contacts.

4. Hold volunteers accountable. Have you ever worked with a committee to find out that a few committee members really don't do anything, offering a lot of talk of whom they know but not even leveraging those relationships?

Get serious about volunteers. Outline, in writing, your expectations and the responsibilities of three to four committee chairs and their volunteer committees. Let each chair recruit members to their own committee. Offer training to volunteers. Develop a regular reporting system, celebrating successes and noting incomplete action items. All of these simple tips hold volunteers accountable and let them know that you expect them to contribute more than just their presence.

Interested in learning “How to Recruit, Train and Motivate Volunteers?” join the Golf Tournament Association of America’s training session on July 7th, 2006.
Tips on How to Organize a Successful Tournament

Partnering with the Golf Course Forging a strong partnership with a golf course can help you establish a strong foundation for a successful golf tournament. Once you have identified a course that meets your groups needs, now it is time to iron out the details with golf course staff. Agreeing to terms that work for both you and the course can save everyone costly confusion on tournament day. Here are a few things to consider before you partner with a course: The Course Will Like to Know: Tournament Purpose. Is this a corporate networking event or primarily a fundraiser? Is your organization a non-profit organization and possibly tax exempt? While golf courses are swamped with requests for their best tournament rates for worthy causes, courses often offer preferred rates to charitable tournaments, particularly if the tournament benefits a local cause. Tournament Timing. What is your preferred date and start time, along with an alternative date? Remember, courses can...

Is a Tournament Right for You?

How much can we make? That is often the first question we are asked when we partner to organize a golf tournament. While it is estimated that there are more than 500,000 golf tournaments organized each year in the United States, most sources agree that the average ‘profit’ for a first-time tournament is $5,000. With some inaugural tournaments generating more than $40,000, one should ask, How did that tournament reach its goal? Our first question of tournament organizers is not ‘how much do you want to make’ but What is the purpose of your golf tournament?. In fact there are 4 pointers that we encourage organizers to consider before determining if a tournament is right for them. Set and agree to clear goals. In addition to supporting families as they face this terrific challenge, HGF provides: gift baskets filled with necessities and toys; parking for families; catered meals to parents or caregivers and fulfills shopping requests for patient families. HGF’s main fundraiser each year is...
